Surface and terrain reconstruction from very high resolution imagery: Where are we now?
نویسندگان
چکیده
3D Geographic Information and especially Digital Surface or Terrain Models are becoming essential data for many applications, from risk mapping (avalanches, volcanoes, floods, ..) to town and infrastructure planning with virtual and augmented reality. Automatic surface reconstruction from images with shape from stereo techniques has been a subject of constant attention within remote sensing, photogrammetric, image processing and computer vision communities since the 70's. These techniques had reached a limit when addressing scenes with poor textures, discontinuities and occlusions as encountered in urban areas with HR geospatial imagery. These limitations have faded lately with the rise of new technologies (e.g. high quality aerial digital cameras) and techniques (e.g multi-view processing) and consequently expectations of full (or nearly) automation at short term have become a trend again. Meanwhile, LASER scanning technologies, which provide a reliable description of the imaged scenes in the form of 3D cloud points, have achieved a certain degree of maturity.

Densification of Dtm Grid Data Using Single Satellite Imagery
Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) are simply regular grids of elevation measurements over the land surface. DTMs are mainly extracted by applying the technique of stereo measurements on images available from photogrammetry and remote sensing. Enormous amounts of local and global DTM data with different specifications are now available. However, there are many geoscience and engineering applications...
متن کاملGeneration of Coarse 3d Models of Urban Areas from High Resolution Stereo Satellite Images
With the emergence of more and more satellites delivering very high resolution (VHR) imagery with ground sampling distances in the range of one meter or below the generation of three dimensional urban models directly from space may become possible. Such models are required for many applications in areas where no up-to-date detailed urban mapping exists like in developing countries. Besides the ...
متن کاملAlternative Methods for Developing and Assessing the Accuracy of UAV-Derived DEMs
Digital terrain models are invaluable datasets that are frequently used for visualizing, modeling, and analyzing Earth surface processes. Accurate models covering local scale landscape features are often very expensive and have poor temporal resolution. This research investigates the utility of UAV acquired imagery for generating high resolution terrain models and provides a detailed accuracy a...
متن کاملDetermination of Terrain Features in a Terrain Model from Laser Radar Data
Determination of terrain data features in a high resolution terrain data model are required in a large variety of applications where visualization is an important aspect. This is a complex problem because a terrain model is generally a mapping of the reality into a continuous 3D surface model of arbitrary shape, requiring an extremely large amount of data especially when a high resolution is re...
متن کاملAtmospheric and Terrain Correction of Ikonos Imagery Using Atcor3
When ordering very high resolution (VHR) imagery of IKONOS or QuickBird a cloud coverage up to 20 % within the scenes has to be accepted. This indicates the high impact of atmospheric conditions to VHR imagery. Beside clouds the images are influenced by haze oftentimes. This haze could be removed using new atmospheric correction algorithms, which were not available for VHR data so far. Furtherm...
